Alstom, in cooperation with Hindustan Construction Co., has been awarded a contract worth over 285 million euros by Tehri Hydro Development Corp. to install a 1 GW variable-speed pumped-storage hydropower plant on the Bhagirathi River, located in the state of Uttarakhand, India.
This will be India's first pumped-storage power plant to use variable-speed technology. Alstom's share of the contract is worth about 180 million euros. The company will supply four 250 MW variable-speed turbine and generator units and other equipment, including main inlet valves and control and protection systems. Upon completion, the plant's electricity output will provide much-needed power to the country's northern grid.
